Destination Canada Announces a New Cycling Tourism Corridor

Attentive hosts can enhance their guests' experience by suggesting must-see attractions and key stops along the route.

30/09/2024 - Last week, Destination Canada announced the creation of corridors to boost tourism, including a cycling corridor connecting Ottawa, Cornwall, and Montreal. This new development is set to attract not only cyclists but also tourists interested in cycling-related activities. Outdoor enthusiasts will surely need accommodations tailored to their needs, either to complete long rides or simply to rest after their adventures across Quebec’s landscapes.

Property owners and managers can help make the experience unforgettable with simple measures, such as providing relevant information. Why not create storage spaces for guests’ bikes and equipment as well?

The Cycle Ontario and Quebec corridor will link existing cycling routes and new roads between Ottawa, Montreal, and Cornwall. The project's goal is to establish a dynamic, year-round cycling tourism corridor that celebrates the region’s unique cultural and natural heritage while offering economic, environmental, and social benefits.

Some of the featured attractions along the corridor include the UNESCO-listed Rideau Canal, as well as local businesses such as wineries, craft breweries, Indigenous tourism experiences, and agritourism initiatives.

Adapting your rental to welcome cyclists can be a strategy to attract this type of traveler. Simple improvements include offering secure bike storage or providing maps of local cycling routes.

Connected Corridors

The cycling corridor project will connect several well-established bike routes in the region, creating a broader and more accessible network for cycling enthusiasts. Here are a few examples of these routes:

  • Outaouais Route: A scenic itinerary along the Ottawa River, linking Ottawa to the Gatineau region.
  • Ottawa River Trail: A route along the shores of the Ottawa River, ideal for cyclists looking to enjoy nature and the scenery.
  • Le P’tit Train du Nord Linear Park: A former railway track converted into a bike path, connecting Saint-Jérôme to Mont-Laurier, north of Montreal.

  • Route Verte, Quebec: The largest network of bike paths in North America, extending over 5,300 km.
  • The Great Trail, Canada: Formerly known as the Trans Canada Trail, this impressive route covers 27,000 km, crossing all provinces and territories.
  • Niagara Corridor: Spanning 140 km, this corridor runs through the famous Niagara wine region and attracts cyclists from around the world.
  • Ottawa-Cornwall-Montreal Cycling Tourism Corridor: Currently under development, this corridor will connect Ottawa to Montreal via Cornwall, showcasing attractions such as the Rideau Canal. Its total length is yet to be determined, but it is expected to stretch several hundred kilometers and could become a major draw for cyclists across Canada.
