Forecasts of an Influx of American Tourists to Canada and Quebec This Summer
Visits from U.S. residents account for more than two-thirds of the total, meaning that any increase in tourist flow would have a significant impact on Canada’s economy.
17/03/2025 - Recent trade tensions between the United States and Canada, along with the Trump administration’s protectionist policies, have led to an increase in visits from U.S. residents to Canada, driven by the strengthening of the U.S. dollar. A year ago, one U.S. dollar was worth CAD 1.35, but it peaked at CAD 1.47 in February. This situation creates an opportunity for Canada, and particularly Quebec, to attract more American tourists this summer.
According to Statistics Canada, in 2024, 79% of all visits to Canada came from U.S. residents, totaling 23.5 million visits. In Quebec, 65% of international visits were made by American tourists, representing approximately 2.7 million visits. On average, each American visitor spends about CAD 1,200 per trip, which has a significant economic impact on Quebec’s tourism industry. A rise in U.S. visitors could significantly boost Canada’s tourism sector.
Signs of an Upcoming Tourism Boom
A recent article from La Presse suggests that Quebec could experience a surge in visitor numbers this summer. Nearly half of Quebecers who cancelled trips to the U.S. are considering a destination within the province instead, generating an estimated CAD 1.5 billion in additional economic benefits (Read on La Presse).
