Tensions in U.S. politics evolve into a scenario that could benefit tourism in Canada

If Americans travel more to Canada due to the devaluation of the Canadian dollar or if Canadians opt for more domestic destinations, Canadian tourism could benefit.

07/02/2025 - Currency fluctuations and the economic dynamics between Canada and the United States continue to attract the attention of tourism professionals. Continued devaluation of the Canadian dollar against the U.S. dollar could make travel to Canada more attractive for American tourists. Additionally, there is a possibility that Canadian tourists will travel less to the United States and more within their own country.

TeamCHECKiN analyzed official data from Statistics Canada and concluded that Canadian tourists represent, on average, 75% of the sector's revenue, a figure that rose to 97% during the pandemic. Currently, the share of accommodation revenue generated by domestic tourists stands at 62%, up from 57% in the pre-pandemic period. The growth of domestic tourism could lead to an increase in demand for stays in temporary accommodations.

American visitors also play a key role among foreign tourists, who account for 25% of total Canadian tourism revenue and 38% of accommodation revenue in the country. According to Statistics Canada, eight out of ten visitors come from the United States, highlighting the importance of this neighboring market.

Recent data shows that more Americans are traveling to Canada. In November 2024, 1.4 million trips by U.S. residents were recorded, marking an 18.4% increase compared to 2023. Of those, 74.2% arrived by car, while air arrivals grew by 14%.

In addition, the number of Canadians travelling to the United States continues to outnumber the total number of Americans entering Canada. This means that there is plenty of room for this situation to reverse and for more Americans and Canadians to take advantage of Canada’s tourism services.

While the devaluation of the Canadian dollar may continue to attract American visitors, the trend of Canadians traveling more domestically also remains strong. In this context, Airbnb hosts and accommodation managers need to closely monitor these changes to optimize their strategies. TeamCHECKiN continues to track these trends to support sector professionals.
